Savannah, Georgia 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Savannah in laser-cut Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the river city and its marsh-laced coast carved one depth contour per layer, from the wharves of River Street to the lighthouse at Tybee.
Savannah has always faced the water twice: upriver toward the cotton wharves that built the squares, and downriver past Fort Pulaski to the sea. The Savannah River carries container ships past the old town daily, an improbable sight from a River Street bench. Seaward, Tybee Island's lighthouse, Georgia's oldest and tallest, marks the entrance, while the Moon River of Johnny Mercer's song winds through the marsh south of town, as modest and lovely as advertised. On the chart, the shipping channel's engraved depths cut through a birch landscape that is half water, half marsh, all Lowcountry.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark, Light, or White.
Squares and steeples get the postcards; the river and marsh do the work. This chart sides with the water.
The engraving spans River Street and the port reach, Fort Pulaski, Tybee and its light, Wassaw Sound, and the Moon River marshes. The coast continues on the Georgia Coast chart and north to Hilton Head.
