The Hawaiian Islands in a 13.5 by 43 inch panorama of stacked Baltic birch: the whole chain carved one depth contour per layer, in the long format the archipelago's geometry demands.
The islands are a conveyor belt's work: the Pacific plate slides over a stationary hot spot, so the chain ages from northwest to southeast, Kauai the weathered elder, the Big Island the newborn still growing, and the next island, Kamaʻehuakanaloa, already rising unseen off its southern coast. Between them run the channels, and in winter those channels fill with humpbacks, the North Pacific's population arriving to calve in the sheltered leeward waters. On the chart, each island stands on its steep volcanic pedestal, the sea floor plunging between them in engraved layers that make the chain's true nature, mountaintops in an ocean, unmistakable.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.
