How the Water Becomes Wood

The UV series reaches the same waters by a different route, and skips the glass so your hands can follow the depths too.

  1. SurveyThe build starts from the same real sounding data as the carved charts.
  2. CutDepth bands are laser-cut from Baltic birch, up to five layers.
  3. StainEach water layer is stained by hand, darker with depth.
  4. PrintHigh-resolution UV printing lays the fine detail and points of interest onto the top layer.
  5. Open finishNo acrylic cover: run your fingers across the contours and feel the water fall away.

Lake Tahoe in the UV series: laser-cut Baltic birch layers, hand-stained toward the deep cobalt the lake is famous for, with the Sierra terrain around the lake, its bays, and place names UV-printed in fine detail on the top layer.

Tahoe is the second-deepest lake in the United States, 1,645 feet down at its lowest point, holding enough water to matter to two states and staying so clear that white dinner plates were once used to measure visibility. Emerald Bay curls off the southwest shore around its single island, the most photographed corner of the lake. On the map, the staining carries the depth: nearly black over the vast central basin, brightening fast at the shelf where the water goes that impossible peacock blue off the beaches.

The UV series skips the acrylic cover, so the layered shoreline sits open under your hand, and the printed detail keeps the crowded south shore legible in a way engraving at this scale cannot.

Ski people, beach people, and everyone who has argued about which side of the lake is better: settle it on the wall.

The print runs from South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay around the west shore to Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Incline Village, with Sand Harbor and Cave Rock along the Nevada side.
