Lake Chelan in the UV mountain series, in a square 27 by 26 inch format built for the strangest lake shape in Washington: fifty miles of glacial water snaking through the North Cascades, hand-stained birch layers with the surrounding peaks UV-printed around it.

Chelan is the third-deepest lake in the United States, plunging 1,486 feet into a trench the glaciers gouged between mountain walls, deeper than the surface of the Pacific just offshore. At its head sits Stehekin, a community you cannot drive to: residents and hikers arrive by the Lady of the Lake ferry, by floatplane, or on foot over the passes. At its foot, the town of Chelan anchors orchard and wine country in the sun. The staining runs nearly black through the deep uplake fjord and brightens into the broad, warmer basin at the lower end, the lake's two personalities in one gradient.

With no acrylic cover, the long cut channel of the lake sits open under your finger, fifty miles traced in one motion. The printed terrain holds the Cascades detail no engraving could carry.
