Key West, Florida 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Key West in stacked Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the last island carved one depth contour per layer, harbor, flats, and the deep water that made the town's first fortunes.
Key West got rich on shipwrecks before it got famous for sunsets: in the 1830s the wreckers salvaging the reef made this, briefly, one of the wealthiest towns per capita in America. The layers since are all still visible from the water, the Navy's deep basins, Mallory Square where the sunset celebration convenes nightly, Fort Zachary's beach at the island's corner, Hemingway's town behind the harbor. Seventy miles west, the Dry Tortugas close the chain. On the chart, the harbor's engraved channels cut through flats that glow pale in the birch, the exact geometry the wreckers exploited.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Light or White.
Mile marker zero deserves wall space. This is the version with depth.
The engraving spans the harbor and Mallory Square, Fort Zachary, Stock Island, and the channels toward the Marquesas. Up the chain: the full Keys chart and the Upper Keys.
