How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.

Mexico Beach to Bald Point in stacked Baltic birch, 13.5 by 31 inches: Florida's Forgotten Coast carved one depth contour per layer, the stretch that stayed old Florida while the rest of the state went vertical.

This coast runs on oysters, scallops, and low buildings. Apalachicola's bay built one of America's great oyster traditions, and the town behind it still looks like the 1900s seafood port it was. Cape San Blas hooks its dune-backed spit around St. Joseph Bay's clear grass flats, prime scalloping every summer. St. George Island stretches its state-park sands offshore, and St. Vincent Island stays wilder still, a refuge reachable only by boat. On the chart, the bays sit pale and productive behind the barrier line, with the capes' shifting shoals braiding the gulf side.

Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Light or White.

People protective of this coast will recognize the compliment: nothing on this chart is taller than a dune.
