How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
  6. FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.

Sebago Lake in stacked Baltic birch: Maine's deepest lake carved layer by layer, from the sandy shallows of the state park to the cold hole in the middle that gives the lake its reputation.

Sebago drops to 316 feet, deep enough that its bottom lies below sea level, and its water is famously clean: it supplies greater Portland and is one of the few public sources in the country pure enough to be exempt from federal filtration requirements. Landlocked salmon were first described to science from this lake, and the deep basin still holds them. The Songo River winds out of the north end toward Long Lake, a passage small boats have made for two centuries. On the chart, the plunge is the drama: broad top layers around Frye Island and the bays, then birch stepping down and down to the deepest engraving mid-lake.

Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.

Sebago people swear the water feels different. The chart shows why: there is a small canyon under the pontoon boats.

The engraving covers Sebago Lake State Park and the Songo, Frye Island, Raymond and the Jordan Bay shore, and Standish at the southern end. Companions: Portland and Casco Bay and Moosehead Lake.
