About this piece

Hampton Roads is where the James, the Elizabeth, and the Nansemond meet the Chesapeake, one of the great natural harbors in the world. The tide moves the whole basin, setting the current for the ships at Norfolk and the fishing from Willoughby Spit to the York River. The tide hand rotates once every 12 hours and 25 minutes with the lunar cycle, holding the harbor's rhythm after a single setting at high tide.

Right for a Norfolk or Hampton home, a Navy family, or anyone who has crossed the bridge-tunnel.

The harbor is carved in relief on the Norfolk 3D chart.

01
Chart
The recessed birch face carries the water's etched shoreline over a hand-stained sea.
02
Movement
A quartz mechanism turns the tide hand once every 12 hours and 25 minutes, the lunar tide cycle.
03
Set once
Align it at your local high tide, or at the full or new moon, and it tracks from there.
04
Note
Tide movements are offered for East Coast waters only; Gulf and West Coast tides run too irregular for a quartz mechanism.
One hand on this wall answers to the moon, not the hour.
