About this piece
This stretch of coast is more marsh than land, and the tide runs it. Lowcountry tides swing five to six feet, filling the creeks behind Edisto, Botany Bay, Seabrook, and Kiawah, then draining them back to pluff mud, and the Stono and North Edisto inlets move enormous water on every change. The tide hand rotates once every 12 hours and 25 minutes to match the lunar cycle, so after one setting against local high water it keeps the rhythm, while the time hands cover everything the water does not decide.
Right for an Edisto Beach cottage, a Kiawah or Seabrook home, or anyone who times the boat ride by the creek.
The full state shoreline is carved on the South Carolina Coast 3D chart.

How the water becomes wood
One hand on this wall answers to the moon, not the hour.
The tide hand turns once every 12 hours and 25 minutes, the lunar cycle. Set it at your local high tide once and it tracks from there, over the carved, hand-stained shoreline of Edisto Island to Folly Beach.
For the wall you pass on the way down to the water.
Mudroom, kitchen, the wall above the boat keys. Birch face, hand-stained sea, quartz movement, one AA battery, ready to hang.
