About this piece

The Sound is a fjord system in plain sight, carved by ice and dropping past 900 feet in places, deeper than most of the open coast. Ferries stitch it together in the largest ferry system in the country, orcas work its channels, and the cities stack along its eastern shore from Tacoma through Seattle to Everett. The staining reads like the water itself: dark, cold blues through the deep main basin and Colvos Passage, paler tones over the mudflats and bays where the tide goes out for half a mile.

With no acrylic cover, the maze of islands sits bare under your hand, Vashon and Whidbey and Bainbridge each a shape you can find by feel. The printing carries the dense geography engraving could not fit.

Ferry commuters know their crossing the way drivers know a highway exit. Every route is printed here.

The print spans Seattle and Elliott Bay, Bainbridge and Vashon, the long reach of Whidbey Island, Hood Canal branching west, and Tacoma's Commencement Bay at the south end.

The same water, open to the touch.

The same water, open to the touch.

No glass between you and the chart. The depth bands of Puget Sound are laser-cut and stacked from birch, up to five layers, and the fine detail is UV-printed onto the top layer, so you can run a hand across the shallows and feel the water fall away.

Lighter on the wall, same shoreline.

A solid birch frame, hanging hardware on the back, ready the day it arrives. The UV series is the way to put Puget Sound in a hallway, an office or a cottage bedroom.
