About this piece

The lake runs some 25 miles through the Idaho Panhandle, folded between national forest ridges that come straight down to the water. Every winter, bald eagles gather over Wolf Lodge Bay to feed on spawning kokanee, one of the most reliable eagle-watching spectacles in the lower 48. And off the resort at the north end floats the golf hole everyone asks about: the movable island green of the 14th, sitting right there in the printed detail. The staining follows the lake's real basin, darkest over the deep water south of the point.

No acrylic covers the UV series, so the shoreline's cut edge and every bay stay touchable, and the printing carries detail down to the small coves the wakeboats claim by nine each morning.

Locals split loyalty between town beaches and the quiet southern arms toward the Chain Lakes. Both ends of the argument are on the map.

The print spans the city of Coeur d'Alene and Tubbs Hill, Wolf Lodge Bay, Arrow Point, Harrison partway down the eastern shore, and the St. Joe River country at the southern end.

The same water, open to the touch.

The same water, open to the touch.

No glass between you and the chart. The depth bands of Lake Coeur d'Alene are laser-cut and stacked from birch, up to five layers, and the fine detail is UV-printed onto the top layer, so you can run a hand across the shallows and feel the water fall away.

Lighter on the wall, same shoreline.

A solid birch frame, hanging hardware on the back, ready the day it arrives. The UV series is the way to put Lake Coeur d'Alene in a hallway, an office or a cottage bedroom.
