Oregon Coast 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
The Oregon Coast in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: the whole 363-mile shoreline carved one depth contour per layer, sea stacks, capes, dunes, and all.
Oregon did something radical with its coast: the 1967 Beach Bill declared the entire ocean shore public, every mile of it, so the sea stacks at Cannon Beach, the dunes marching south of Florence, and the coves below every headland belong to whoever walks in. Haystack Rock rises from its tidepools like the state's mascot, Yaquina Head's light marks Newport's harbor and its fishing fleet, and Tillamook's bays feed the cheese country behind them. On the chart, the coast's architecture runs top to bottom: rocky capes engraved sharp, river-mouth bays notching the line, the shelf sliding into deep Pacific birch.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and finished behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.
Every Oregonian owns this coast by statute and by heart. The chart formalizes the second claim.
The engraving spans Astoria to Brookings: Cannon Beach, Tillamook, Newport, Florence and the dunes, Coos Bay, and the southern capes. The river's mouth gets its own close-up on the Columbia River Mouth chart.
