Whidbey & Camano Islands, Washington 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Whidbey and Camano Islands in laser-cut Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the two long islands of the northern sound carved one depth contour per layer, with the famous pass that guards Whidbey's top.
Deception Pass earns its name daily: the narrow gap between Whidbey and Fidalgo runs currents that boil visibly under the 1935 bridge, the most photographed span in the state, while kayakers time the slack like a launch window. Down-island, Ebey's Landing preserves a whole nineteenth-century farming landscape above driftwood beaches, Penn Cove grows the mussels that carry its name onto menus everywhere, and Camano runs quieter across its own passage, all state parks and beach cabins. On the chart, the pass's engraved channel pinches dramatically between broad island layers, the whole drama in birch.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.
Bridge-and-ferry islanders, both kinds represented here, share one chart peacefully.
The engraving spans Deception Pass, Oak Harbor and Penn Cove, Coupeville and Ebey's, Langley, and Camano's shores. The wider waters run on Puget Sound and the Salish Sea.
