Seen entire, the coast reveals its architecture: the shelf running narrow against the north's cliffs, Point Conception's famous corner where the shoreline turns east and the water warms, the Channel Islands standing offshore in their sanctuary, and the southern bight curving gently to San Diego. Kelp forests shadow the shallows for most of the run, and the great capes, Mendocino, Reyes, Conception, Loma, punctuate the birch like chapter breaks. Highway 1 clings to the top layer for hundreds of miles.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.
