Western Panhandle, Florida 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
The Western Panhandle in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: Florida's Emerald Coast in one long carving, from Pensacola's great bay to the fishing fleets of Destin, every depth contour its own layer.
The sand here squeaks. It is nearly pure quartz, washed down from the Appalachians over millennia and ground sugar-fine, and against it the gulf turns the green that named the coast. Pensacola Bay opens behind its barrier islands where the Navy has trained aviators for a century and the Blue Angels fly home shows over the beach. Eastward, Santa Rosa Island runs its long white line past Navarre to the pass at Destin, where the charter fleet works some of the shortest runs to deep water on the gulf. On the chart, the barrier line, the passes, and the bays behind them keep their true shapes in the birch.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and finished behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Light or White.
Sugar sand, green water, and a bay for every afternoon wind. The whole coast, framed.
The engraving spans Pensacola and its bay, Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Fort Walton, and Destin's East Pass. Eastward the story continues on the Forgotten Coast chart.
