How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
  6. FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.

The British Columbia Coast in laser-cut Baltic birch: the most deeply carved shoreline on the continent rendered in actual carved layers, fjords, islands, and passages cut one depth contour at a time.

BC's coast is short as the crow flies and nearly endless as the water runs: glaciers cut fjords into it so deeply that the shoreline, unrolled, would stretch most of the way around the planet's latitude. The Inside Passage threads its sheltered route north past the Great Bear Rainforest's misty inlets, Desolation Sound holds the warmest summer anchorages, and Haida Gwaii stands offshore as its own ancient world. On the chart, the fjords are the show: engraved channels plunging between island layers, some deeper than the open ocean outside them.

Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and finished behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.

Cruisers, kayakers, and float-plane pilots all keep lifetime lists on this coast. The chart is the master copy.

The engraving spans the Strait of Georgia and the Sunshine Coast, Desolation Sound, the Inside Passage, and the northern archipelagos. City close-ups: Vancouver and Victoria.
