Scandinavia's coasts are the world's masterclass in glacial carving. Norway's fjords cut so deep that Sognefjord bottoms out more than 4,000 feet below sea level, farther down than most of the open North Sea; Sweden faces the Baltic through the Stockholm archipelago's tens of thousands of islands; and Denmark threads the narrow straits, Øresund, the belts, that gate the whole Baltic's exchange with the ocean.
