Lake Skaneateles, New York 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Skaneateles Lake in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: sixteen miles of the clearest water in the Finger Lakes, carved one depth contour per layer in a long format that matches the lake's slender line.
Skaneateles is the lake the others get compared to. Its water is so clean that Syracuse drinks it unfiltered, one of the last major unfiltered supplies in the country, and on a calm day the teal shallows off the village look borrowed from somewhere tropical. The village of Skaneateles sits right at the northern tip, its pier and dinner-cruise boats a few steps from the shops, while the southern half of the lake runs quiet between steep farm hills. On the chart, that famous clarity becomes structure: clean steps of birch falling away from the shoreline into a basin that reaches its greatest depth toward the lake's midsection.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and finished behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.
People here are lake-proud in a way that borders on smug, and honestly the water backs them up.
The engraving runs from the village and Clift Park down both shores past Borodino to Glen Haven at the foot. Companions: the full Finger Lakes chart and deep Seneca.
