How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
  6. FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.

Palm Beach in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: the island, the lagoon behind it, and the inlet between, carved one depth contour per layer with the Gulf Stream's deep water pressing close offshore.

Palm Beach faces some of the most consequential water on the East Coast: the Gulf Stream swings nearer to shore here than almost anywhere north of the Keys, which is why the sailfish boats can be trolling blue water minutes after clearing the inlet. Inside, Lake Worth Lagoon runs the island's whole length, with Peanut Island sitting in the inlet like a sandbar party that got zoning approval. The town itself has kept its Gilded Age bearing since Flagler built The Breakers and pointed America's fortunes south. On the chart, the shelf drops away fast in the birch beyond the beach, the whole reason this coast fishes the way it does.

Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark, Light, or White.

Worth Avenue on one side, blue water on the other, and the inlet negotiating between.

The engraving spans the island and the lagoon, the inlet and Peanut Island, and West Palm's waterfront. Neighbors: Juno Beach and Jupiter Island.
