How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

The Strand does one thing at heroic scale: sixty miles of continuous beach, and Myrtle sits at the center of it with the piers that organize local life, Cherry Grove up north, Second Avenue and Springmaid in town, Apache stretching longest of all. At the southern end, Murrells Inlet bends the coast inward around its marsh, the seafood-shack capital of the state with a marshwalk to prove it, while Little River closes the north at the state line.
