Outer Banks, North Carolina UV-Printed Wood Map | Layered Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
The UV series reaches the same waters by a different route, and skips the glass so your hands can follow the depths too.
- SurveyThe build starts from the same real sounding data as the carved charts.
- CutDepth bands are laser-cut from Baltic birch, up to five layers.
- StainEach water layer is stained by hand, darker with depth.
- PrintHigh-resolution UV printing lays the fine detail and points of interest onto the top layer.
- Open finishNo acrylic cover: run your fingers across the contours and feel the water fall away.
The Outer Banks in the UV series: North Carolina's barrier island chain in laser-cut, hand-stained Baltic birch, with the sounds, inlets, and beach towns UV-printed across the top layer.
The Banks are a two-hundred-mile dare against the Atlantic, sand islands rarely more than a mile wide holding back the ocean from Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, some of the largest sounds on the American coast. Offshore lies the Graveyard of the Atlantic, where Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras has claimed ships for four centuries, and where the Wright brothers chose the steady wind at Kitty Hawk to fly. The staining tells the water story: pale gold over the vast shallow sounds, darkening seaward past the breakers toward deep Atlantic blue.
Without an acrylic cover, the cut edge of the barrier chain runs bare under your fingertip, the whole fragile geography touchable. UV printing keeps the long string of towns and inlets crisp.
OBX families measure their lives in mile markers and beach accesses. Every one of their summers is somewhere on this strand.
The print runs from Corolla and Duck through Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Roanoke Island, down Hatteras Island to the cape, and across the inlet to Ocracoke.
