New Jersey Coast 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
The New Jersey Coast in stacked Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: all 130 miles from Sandy Hook to Cape May carved one depth contour per layer, the shoreline that invented the American beach vacation.
The boardwalk itself was born here: Atlantic City laid the country's first in 1870, and the idea colonized the whole coast, each town growing its own version of the summer ritual. Behind the famous beaches runs the state's quieter water world, the barrier islands backed by miles of sedge-marsh bays, the inlets, Manasquan, Barnegat, Absecon, cutting their tide-swept channels between. Sandy Hook reaches toward New York Harbor at the top; Cape May closes the bottom where bay meets ocean. On the chart, the barrier-and-bay pattern repeats down the birch like a signature, with each inlet's engraved channel breaking the line.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.
Everyone from the Garden State has an exit and a beach town. Both systems map onto this chart.
The engraving spans Sandy Hook to Cape May with every inlet in place. Zoom in with the North Shore, South Shore, or Long Beach Island charts.
