Moosehead Lake, Maine 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Moosehead Lake in laser-cut Baltic birch: the largest lake in Maine, forty miles of big north-woods water carved one depth contour per layer, with the cliff island at its center that has drawn people for thousands of years.
Moosehead is where Maine stops being coastal and becomes wilderness. Greenville sits at the foot with its seaplane docks, the restored steamship Katahdin still crosses the lake in season, and beyond the far shores the road network simply gives out. Mid-lake rises Mount Kineo, a 700-foot cliff of flint-hard rhyolite that Native peoples traveled great distances to quarry for tools long before any road existed. Thoreau came through by canoe in the 1850s and wrote about this water. On the chart, Kineo's peninsula juts into the birch at the Narrows, with the lake's arms reaching north toward the last engraved townships.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.
Camps up here pass down through families with the canoes and the stories. This chart tends to hang beside the door.
The engraving spans Greenville and its junction, Rockwood across from Kineo, Lily Bay, and the northern reaches toward Northeast Carry. Southern Maine's deep lake, Sebago, makes the natural pair.
