How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
  6. FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.

Lake Placid in laser-cut Baltic birch, 16 by 20 inches: the Adirondack lake that lent its name to two Winter Olympics, carved one depth contour per layer with its islands and mountain shores in true relief.

The village everyone knows actually fronts Mirror Lake; Lake Placid proper lies just beyond, wilder and bigger, wrapped around its two large islands with Whiteface Mountain standing over the eastern shore. The Games came here in 1932 and again in 1980, when a college hockey team beat the Soviets a few blocks from this water, and the ovals and jumps still train Olympians today. Camps line the western lakeshore in the old Adirondack style, boathouses and all. On the chart, Buck and Moose islands sit as broad shapes in the upper layers while the lake's deep basins step down between them and the shore.

Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.

Morning paddles here come with a mountain reflected in the bow wake. That geometry is now wall art.
