How the Water Becomes Wood

The UV series reaches the same waters by a different route, and skips the glass so your hands can follow the depths too.

  1. SurveyThe build starts from the same real sounding data as the carved charts.
  2. CutDepth bands are laser-cut from Baltic birch, up to five layers.
  3. StainEach water layer is stained by hand, darker with depth.
  4. PrintHigh-resolution UV printing lays the fine detail and points of interest onto the top layer.
  5. Open finishNo acrylic cover: run your fingers across the contours and feel the water fall away.

Lake Erie in the UV series: layered, laser-cut Baltic birch with hand-stained water and the lake's dense cartography UV-printed across the top layer, Toledo to Buffalo.

Erie is the shallowest and warmest of the Great Lakes, averaging just 62 feet, and the busiest with life for exactly that reason: the walleye fishery out of the western basin is famous across the country. The staining tells the lake's story honestly, pale over the island shallows in the west, deepening toward the darker eastern basin off Buffalo, the whole tilt of the lakebed readable in color.

No acrylic covers the UV series, so the cut shorelines sit bare under your hand, and the printed labels keep every port and island legible at a size engraving could not manage. It is the more affordable route to the same water.

Charter captains, islanders, and south-shore lifers can trace the reef lines they fish with one finger.

The print spans Cleveland, Toledo, Sandusky, Presque Isle at Erie, Point Pelee, and the Bass Islands around Put-in-Bay. For the engraved deep-relief treatment behind acrylic glass, see the Lake Erie 3D chart, and the island cluster close up on the Put-in-Bay chart.
