How the Water Becomes Wood

The UV series reaches the same waters by a different route, and skips the glass so your hands can follow the depths too.

  1. SurveyThe build starts from the same real sounding data as the carved charts.
  2. CutDepth bands are laser-cut from Baltic birch, up to five layers.
  3. StainEach water layer is stained by hand, darker with depth.
  4. PrintHigh-resolution UV printing lays the fine detail and points of interest onto the top layer.
  5. Open finishNo acrylic cover: run your fingers across the contours and feel the water fall away.

Cape Cod in the UV series: the famous flexed arm of Massachusetts in laser-cut, hand-stained Baltic birch, with its bays, harbors, and towns UV-printed in fine detail on the top layer.

The Cape is a glacier's leftover sandbar that became a world of its own, curling forty miles into the Atlantic and hooking back on itself at Provincetown. Three different waters shape it: Cape Cod Bay inside the arm, Nantucket Sound along the southern beaches, and the open Atlantic pounding the outer shore that the National Seashore protects. The canal cuts the wrist, saving ships the long trip around. On the map, the staining separates those waters plainly, the sheltered bay pale and calm-toned against the deeper Atlantic blues outside the forearm.

The UV series carries no acrylic, so the Cape's whole curl is a cut edge you can follow with a finger from the canal to the fist. The printing holds every town along the way.

Whether your Cape is a Chatham Cape, a Wellfleet Cape, or a Provincetown Cape, the argument can continue in front of this map.

The print runs from the canal through Sandwich, Barnstable, and Hyannis, out along Chatham's elbow, up the outer beaches past Wellfleet and Truro to Provincetown, with Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket offshore.
