Lake Champlain in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: a hundred and twenty miles of water between the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains, carved one depth contour per layer in a format long enough to hold it.
Champlain is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country, and one of the most storied. Revolutionary fleets fought at Valcour Island in 1776, Fort Ticonderoga guards the southern narrows, and ferries still stitch New York to Vermont across the middle. Burlington rises on the eastern shore with the lake as its front yard. And somewhere in the deep water, tradition insists, swims Champ, the lake's own monster, celebrated on minor league jerseys and roadside signs. On the chart, the broad island-filled north, the deep central trench past the palisades, and the narrowing southern reach each carry their own character in the birch.
