This chart follows the coastline's own logic. The barrier islands run the arc almost continuously, from Florida's white-sand chain through the Mississippi Sound to Padre Island, the longest barrier island in the world, walling the Laguna Madre behind it. The Intracoastal Waterway threads the whole distance inside them, the protected highway for barges and snowbirds alike. Along the way, the working Gulf shows itself: shrimp fleets, ship channels, and the delta pushing the river's mud out past the marsh. On the chart, the shallow engraved shelf runs wide off every beach town before sliding away toward the deep basin at the frame's edge.
