Picking a size is harder than it looks. A map that looks huge on a phone screen can look like a postage stamp over a sofa, and a big one can swallow a narrow hallway.

Here is the short version, then three measurements that settle it.

The sizes, side by side

12 × 16 in
desk, shelf, nook
16 × 20 in
the all-rounder
24.5 × 31 in
statement wall
13.5 × 31 in
tall formats

Drawn to scale against each other.

  • 12 × 16 inches. A desk wall, a bookshelf, the space beside a window. Lake Tahoe starts here at $99.
  • 16 × 20 inches. The all-rounder: a hallway, a home office, over a side table or a dresser. Most maps that come in this size are $149 to $188.
  • 24.5 × 31 inches. The statement piece: over a sofa, a bed or a mantel, or on a big blank wall. $258 to $375 depending on the water.
  • Tall formats. Long, narrow waters like the Treasure Coast (13.5 × 31) or Lake George are made for the narrow wall beside a door or down a stairwell.

Not every map comes in every size. The product page lists what each water is available in.

Three measurements that settle it

1. Over furniture, think two-thirds

Art over a sofa, console or bed looks right at roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. A 48 inch console wants something around 30 inches wide, which is right where a 24.5 × 31 map lands. A full-size sofa is wider than most single maps, so that is where a pair often works better than one big piece.

2. Hang the center at eye level

Galleries hang art so its center sits about 57 to 60 inches off the floor. That works at home too. The exception is over furniture, where the next rule wins.

3. Leave a hand or two of space above furniture

Keep 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa, console or mantel and the bottom of the frame. Any higher and the map floats away from the furniture. Any lower and it crowds the lamp.

Before you order, tape the outline of the frame on the wall with painter’s tape and live with it for a day. If you keep wishing it were bigger, it should be.

Room by room

  • Over a mantel: 24.5 × 31, centered, with the 8 to 10 inch gap above the mantel shelf.
  • Above a sofa: one 24.5 × 31, or two maps side by side with 3 to 6 inches between them.
  • Hallway: 16 × 20, or a tall format if the wall is narrow. You view it up close, so it does not need to be big.
  • Home office or desk wall: 12 × 16 or 16 × 20, hung a little lower than usual so you see it from the chair.
  • Stairwell: a tall format, with the center about 57 to 60 inches above the middle step.

Still on the fence?

When in doubt between two sizes, go bigger. Depth maps are full of detail, and the extra inches give every layer and place name more room. The one exception is a small room you view up close, like a powder room or a reading nook, where the smaller map is easier to take in.
