About this piece

The Chesapeake gathers rivers from six states, and its edges wander through so many creeks, necks, and coves that the bay claims more shoreline than the entire West Coast. It averages a surprising 21 feet deep, a shallow, productive basin that raises the blue crabs and oysters the region cooks its identity around. On the map, the staining follows the drowned river valley of the ancient Susquehanna, a darker channel winding down the middle with pale stained shallows fanning out to either side.

The UV series leaves the wood uncovered, so every ragged tidewater edge is a cut line you can trace by touch, and the printing keeps hundreds of river and town names legible across the sprawl.

Watermen, sailors out of Annapolis, and everyone with a crab knife and an opinion: this is your water, all of it at once.

The print runs from the Susquehanna Flats past Baltimore and Annapolis, under the Bay Bridge, down both shores through the Choptank and the Potomac mouth to Norfolk and the Virginia capes.

The same water, open to the touch.

The same water, open to the touch.

No glass between you and the chart. The depth bands of Chesapeake Bay are laser-cut and stacked from birch, up to five layers, and the fine detail is UV-printed onto the top layer, so you can run a hand across the shallows and feel the water fall away.

Lighter on the wall, same shoreline.

A solid birch frame, hanging hardware on the back, ready the day it arrives. The UV series is the way to put Chesapeake Bay in a hallway, an office or a cottage bedroom.
