Sanibel Island, Florida 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Sanibel Island in stacked Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the shelling capital of the western hemisphere carved one depth contour per layer, lighthouse to Blind Pass.
Sanibel lies east to west while nearly every other Florida barrier island runs north to south, and that sideways posture is the whole secret: the island catches the gulf's shell drift broadside, piling coquinas, whelks, and the occasional junonia onto its beaches until visitors adopt the bent-over posture locals call the Sanibel stoop. Behind the beaches, Ding Darling refuge keeps half the island in mangrove and roseate spoonbills. On the chart, the shallow shelf that delivers the shells spreads wide in the top layers off the gulf side.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark, Light, or White.
Serious shellers walk at dawn with headlamps and zero shame. This chart is for them, and for everyone who married one.
The engraving spans the lighthouse and causeway, Tarpon Bay and Ding Darling, Captiva across Blind Pass, and the flats of Pine Island Sound. Companions: Fort Myers and Charlotte Harbor.
