Ocean City, Maryland 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart 24.5" x 31"
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Ocean City, Maryland in stacked Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the resort island, the inlet, and wild Assateague across it, carved one depth contour per layer.
The inlet that defines Ocean City is younger than some of its hotels: the great hurricane of 1933 tore it through the barrier island, the town armored it open with jetties, and the cut became the harbor that built the fishing fleet. It also severed Assateague, which went its own way entirely, thirty-seven miles of national seashore where the wild ponies walk the beach a short cast from the boardwalk lights. On the chart, the contrast is the composition: OC's developed grid and dredged bay channels north of the engraved inlet, Assateague's untouched sand and shoals running south, two philosophies of coastline sharing one frame.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.
Boardwalk on one side of the inlet, ponies on the other: the whole argument for this coast.
The engraving spans the boardwalk and inlet, the coastal bays behind town, and Assateague's northern reach. The long-format strand version is the Ocean City 13.5 by 43 chart.
