How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.

Newport Harbor is a small city of boats, thousands of them on moorings and private docks around its islands, among the largest recreational harbors anywhere on the coast. The three-car Balboa Island ferry has crossed the channel since 1919, frozen bananas in view both directions. At the peninsula's tip waits the Wedge, the bodysurfing break created by the jetty's wave reflections, famous for turning south swells into something between a sport and a dare. Behind it all, the Back Bay's estuary winds inland in protected quiet. On the chart, harbor, islands, jetty, and estuary keep their exact engineered and natural shapes in the birch.
