How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
  6. FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.

The New Jersey North Shore in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: Sandy Hook to Manasquan in one long carving, every depth contour its own layer.

The North Shore starts with a superlative: Sandy Hook's lighthouse has burned since 1764, the oldest working lighthouse in the country, guarding the approach to New York Harbor from the tip of its long sand spit. South of it, the shore towns run their distinct personalities down the coast, Sea Bright's narrow sliver, Long Branch's revived boardwalk, Asbury Park with its music-hall soul and the Stone Pony's stage, Spring Lake's quiet, Manasquan's inlet closing the run. The Shark River and Manasquan inlets thread the fishing fleets through. On the chart, the coast's gentle shelf and the inlets' engraved cuts hold the geography of every summer Saturday.

Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.

Bruce country, beach-badge country, back-to-the-city-Sunday country: charted.

The engraving spans the Hook, the Navesink Highlands, Asbury and its neighbors, and Manasquan Inlet. The full coast runs on the New Jersey Coast chart; the river country behind the Hook on Rumson.
