How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.

The North Shore starts with a superlative: Sandy Hook's lighthouse has burned since 1764, the oldest working lighthouse in the country, guarding the approach to New York Harbor from the tip of its long sand spit. South of it, the shore towns run their distinct personalities down the coast, Sea Bright's narrow sliver, Long Branch's revived boardwalk, Asbury Park with its music-hall soul and the Stone Pony's stage, Spring Lake's quiet, Manasquan's inlet closing the run.
