New Hampshire Coast 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
The New Hampshire coast in stacked Baltic birch: all eighteen miles of it, the shortest ocean shoreline of any coastal state, which is exactly why the people who love it love it completely. Every depth contour is a laser-cut layer.
What New Hampshire lacks in length it packs in density. Portsmouth anchors the northern end where the Piscataqua rips through with some of the strongest tidal currents on the Atlantic coast, feeding the broad inland basin of Great Bay. Hampton Beach fills the southern miles with boardwalk summer, Odiorne Point and Rye Harbor keep the middle stretch quieter, and nine miles offshore the Isles of Shoals ride the horizon, split down the middle by the Maine border. On the chart, the river's deep engraved channel, the offshore ledges, and the isles all take their true positions in the birch.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and finished behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.
Eighteen miles means everyone shares the same coast and defends their own mile of it. The whole argument fits in one frame.
The engraving runs from Portsmouth and New Castle down through Rye and Hampton to Seabrook, with the Isles of Shoals offshore. Inland rises Lake Winnipesaukee, the state's other great water.
