Naples, Florida 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Naples in stacked Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: the gulf shore, the pass, and the canal country carved one depth contour per layer, with the wild islands beginning at the map's southern edge.
Naples perfected the calm-gulf evening: the pier reaching out from the old beach neighborhoods, sunset crowds arriving on schedule, water so gentle the paddleboards outnumber the waves. Behind the beach, Port Royal's canals thread million-dollar backyards to Gordon Pass, and just south the manicured coast gives way completely, Rookery Bay's mangroves and then the Ten Thousand Islands, one of the wildest waterscapes in the country. On the chart, that transition is the drama: engraved canal grid to the north, unruly island scatter dissolving into the layers below Gordon Pass.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark, Light, or White.
Pier sunsets and backcountry mornings are the two Naples religions. Both congregations are covered.
The engraving spans the pier and Old Naples, Port Royal and Gordon Pass, Keewaydin Island, and the edge of the Ten Thousand Islands. Up the coast: Fort Myers and Sanibel.
