How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.

  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.

Longboat Key in laser-cut Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: ten quiet miles of barrier island between Anna Maria and Lido, carved one depth contour per layer in a format as long and narrow as the key itself.

Longboat is the composed middle child of this coast, no boardwalk, no pier crowds, just gulf-front condos and old canal neighborhoods facing Sarasota Bay, with the Sister Keys kept wild in the bay behind mid-island. Longboat Pass opens the north end under its drawbridge; New Pass closes the south against Lido. On the chart, the island runs as a single elegant line of birch with the bay's grass flats shallow behind it and the gulf shelf stepping away in front.
