Winnipesaukee scatters more than 250 islands across 72 square miles of water, from estate-sized to barely-a-pine, and navigating among them is a skill locals wear proudly. Wolfeboro on the eastern shore calls itself the oldest summer resort in America, a claim it has been making since a colonial governor built his lake house there in the 1760s. The M/S Mount Washington has crossed these waters in one form since 1872, and each spring the whole state waits for the official declaration of ice-out, the moment the big boat can reach every port. On the chart, the islands crowd the top layers while the Broads open into deep engraved water mid-lake.
