Juno Beach, Florida 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Juno Beach in stacked Baltic birch, 13.5 by 43 inches: the pier, the blue-water shelf, and one of the most important stretches of sand in the hemisphere, carved one depth contour per layer.
Juno's beach works a night shift. This stretch of coast hosts some of the densest sea turtle nesting in the country, thousands of loggerhead, green, and leatherback nests each season, and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center above the dune runs the research and the rescues. By day the pier reaches out over water that goes cobalt fast, the Gulf Stream running close enough to color the horizon. On the chart, that steep shelf is the signature: the layers fall away quickly beyond the surf line, deep water almost within casting distance.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Light or White.
Locals walk this beach at dawn in season, stepping around the fresh tracks. The chart holds the stage those tracks cross.
The engraving spans the pier, the dune parks, and the coast toward the inlets at either end. Companions: Palm Beach and Jupiter Island.
