Jacksonville is a river city that happens to own an ocean. The St. Johns, one of the few major American rivers that flows north, bends through downtown under its bridges, then runs east past the port and the Navy's carriers at Mayport to meet the Atlantic at the jetties. Along the coast, Jax Beach, Neptune, and Atlantic Beach line up their piers and surf breaks, with the intracoastal threading the marsh behind them. On the chart, the river's deep engraved channel dominates the birch, the artery everything else here grew along.
