How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
  6. FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.

Italy in laser-cut Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the boot and its islands carved one depth contour per layer, nearly five thousand miles of coastline in one frame.

Italy's shape is the most recognizable coastline on Earth, and its waters carry the matching resume: the Amalfi Coast's cliff villages above the Tyrrhenian, Venice riding its lagoon at the head of the Adriatic, the Cinque Terre stitched into the Ligurian steeps, and the Strait of Messina's whirlpool waters, Scylla and Charybdis by their older names, separating the mainland from Sicily. Sicily and Sardinia, the Mediterranean's two largest islands, anchor the chart's lower half with their own deep surrounding basins. On the chart, the boot's engraved edge and its seas, Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, Ionian, Adriatic, each keep their true depths.

Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.

For every famiglia with a home region and an opinion about it: the whole peninsula, carved.

The engraving spans Liguria to Puglia, Venice's lagoon, the strait, Sicily, and Sardinia. The whole basin runs on the Mediterranean Sea chart.
