Few charts anywhere hold this much hydrological range. The Mediterranean coast runs Tel Aviv's beaches and Haifa's bay down the western edge. Inland, the Sea of Galilee sits as the lowest freshwater lake on Earth, and the Jordan drops from it to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on any continent, water so dense with salt that swimmers read newspapers afloat. At the chart's southern tip, Eilat opens onto the Red Sea's coral reefs, tropical diving at the end of a desert. On the chart, each water keeps its own character in the birch: coastal shelf, deep rift lakes, and reef, stacked down four feet of wood.
