The Colorado spent millions of years cutting a mile down through the plateau, exposing rock layers that read like pages, and this chart answers in kind: each sheet of birch a contour, the rims high, the river's dark line winding at the bottom of the stack, the side canyons, Bright Angel, Havasu, branching like veins. The river runs 277 miles through the park, rafters measuring their trips in rapids and rim hikers measuring theirs in switchbacks, and both parties navigate exactly the topography stacked here.
