How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

Water is Fort Lauderdale's street grid. The New River winds through downtown past megayachts moored at private docks, canals lace the neighborhoods so thoroughly that boats outnumber pools in some of them, and the whole system funnels to Port Everglades, whose dredged basin handles cruise ships drawing more water than anything else on this coast. The town's claim as yachting capital of the world gets renewed every fall when the boat show takes over the waterways. On the chart, the canal grid engraves the land while the port's deep cut drops abruptly through the birch at the inlet.

Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.
