Eleuthera, Bahamas 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Depth Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
Eleuthera in a 13.5 by 43 inch panorama of stacked Baltic birch: an island 110 miles long and scarcely a mile wide, carved one depth contour per layer in the only format that could hold it.
Eleuthera is geography at its most improbable, a ribbon of land so narrow that at the Glass Window Bridge you can stand between two oceans: the Atlantic's deep navy on one side, the Caribbean-facing bank's pale turquoise on the other, separated by a few strides of rock. Off the north end, Harbour Island keeps its famous pink sand and its golf-cart pace; the settlements down-island grew on pineapples and still grow the sweetest ones. On the chart, the two-toned water story runs the full length: dark engraved Atlantic layers against the bank's bright shallows, the island a thin line of birch between worlds.
Each contour is a separate laser-cut sheet, stacked by hand and engraved, behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.
One island, two oceans, forty-three inches: the math works out.
The engraving spans Harbour Island and the Glass Window, Governor's Harbour, and the long run to Lighthouse Point. Bahamian company: Nassau across the water.
