East Long Island Sound 3D Wood Map | Laser-Cut Birch Nautical Chart
How the Water Becomes Wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric sounding data sets every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch, up to nine layers deep.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- EtchDepths and place names are burned into the grain itself, never printed on it.
- FrameA solid Baltic birch frame and acrylic glass finish the piece, ready to hang.
The East End in stacked Baltic birch, 24.5 by 31 inches: the Hamptons, the twin forks, and the protected bays between them, every depth contour laser-cut as its own layer.
Long Island splits at its eastern end into two forks around the Peconic bays, and that geography is the whole East End story. The South Fork carries the ocean beaches and the Hamptons villages out to Montauk Point, where the lighthouse commissioned in the 1790s still marks the island's last rock. The North Fork runs quieter through farm stands and vineyards to Orient. Between them sit Shelter Island, reachable only by ferry, and Gardiners Island, held by one family since the 1630s. On the chart, the bays' sheltered layers nest between the forks while the ocean side drops away in deeper birch off the beaches.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and set behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame in Dark or Light.
Bay people and ocean people are different species out here. Both find their water on this chart.
The engraving runs from Westhampton through Southampton and East Hampton to Montauk, around through Gardiners Bay and Shelter Island, and up the North Fork past Greenport to Orient. The rest of the Sound continues on the Long Island Sound chart.
