About this piece
El Arco is the punctuation mark at the bottom of an 800-mile peninsula: the granite arch at Land's End where two seas trade water, sea lions holding the rocks, glass-bottom pangas circling all day. Behind it, the marina launches one of the world's great sportfishing fleets toward the banks where the marlin flags fly, and around the corner the Sea of Cortez begins, the body of water Jacques Cousteau famously called the world's aquarium. On the chart, the submarine canyon that brings deep water almost to the beach at Cabo is engraved in dramatic close-stacked layers, the secret behind the fishing.
Contours are laser-cut sheet by sheet, stacked by hand, engraved, and finished behind acrylic glass in a solid Baltic birch frame.

Up to 12 sheets of Baltic birch, each one laser-cut to a real depth contour from NOAA survey data, stained darker as the water gets deeper, then stacked by hand. Deep water falls away layer after layer; the shallows sit close to the surface, just like the real thing.
