How the Water Becomes Wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.

The Maine coast folds hardest here, drowned river valleys running inland as long tidal reaches while islands crowd the mouth of every one. Boothbay's harbor sits protected behind them, home port for windjammers, lobster boats, and the excursion fleets that run to Monhegan and out among the seals. Burnt Island Light guards the entrance as it has since 1821, and Southport and Ocean Point wrap the outer shores. On the chart, the region's tangled geography finally reads clearly: the Sheepscot and Damariscotta rivers as deep engraved fingers, the islands as birch stepping out of them.
